Designing the Perfect Site for Your Business
A website can be very overwhelming for small business owners, but it doesn’t have to be. I’ll help you start with the purpose in mind. Once you understand why you need a website and how it should work for you, building the pieces become much easier. I’ll guide you through my process for building a great website customized for your business.
Website Development Process
Determine the Purpose
The purpose of your website will drive the platform and set up of everything else. Do you want an informational site, a place to gather leads or a full e-commerce website? Knowing the end-goal will help you determine what kind of website your business needs.
Write Key Messages
Once you know the purpose of your site, it’s time to think more about how you’ll communicate with key audiences. With your customers in mind you’ll need to develop messages that will grab your client’s attention and then show them how you can help them solve a problem or improve their situation.
Create a Call to Action
Next you’ll want to create a clear call to action for your website. What do you want visitors to do once they find you? You might have more than one call to action throughout your site, but we’ll try to narrow in on one primary goal when building your home page. When a visitor comes to your site, what’s the one thing you most want them to do before they leave?
Map Out Your Site
Next, we’ll spend some time mapping out key pages. How many pages does your website need? How should the pages flow together? How will visitors find the information they are seeking? This is when we’ll name pages and determine your website navigation. We haven’t written the content yet, but at this point we have a pretty good idea how your website will flow.
Write Your Content
Now it’s time to write. Using the site map as an outline and your key messages, we’ll create content for all of your web pages. This part is really fun for some people and daunting for others, but either way we’ll work together to create great content that will speak to your target audiences.
Finally, we’ll decide on photos, icons and other graphics that tell the complete story. If you’ve already built a brand we’ll know what color and fonts we want to use and we’ll pick additional elements to help tell your story.
With all the hard work out of the way (don’t worry, we’ll work together and keep it manageable) your site will come together very quickly and you’ll be ready to launch. Most of my clients can go from start to launch in about one month. Some sites take a little longer and others go up a little quicker, but with a little focus and dedication we can launch most sites in roughly four weeks.
